Production Pursuits - Hoping for Harmony
Hi everyone! As we have learned from yesterday, obtaining permission is so vital in the whole production process. I also mentioned a while back how I had some prospective songs I wanted to use.
Considering this I wanted to obtain permission from the creators so I have gone ahead and reached out to the parties. My top choice is using River Waltz by Alexandre Desplat and Lang Lang, therefore I am hoping I get a response. I feel like it sets the mood of the piece very well and since it is a classical piece it will not hinder any voiceover or ambient sound. Similarly, Kuzhal Oodhi could be used since it is a Carnatic piece of music. It doesn’t fit the exact mood but it does a pretty good job of having an eerie aura at least. Therefore I am still reaching out so I have an operational backup for music.
As far as contacting goes, I have directly messaged using Instagram and also called the corporations. I only just started doing these things and have yet to get a response. Given the magnitude of these parties It is bound to take time for my messages to be seen. Because of this, I have allotted till February 21st according to my schedule to obtain permission. That is two full weeks from today to respond. I can already tell the music is going to be a long winded journey though! Attached is the message format I sent out to all parties associated with both songs:
As an optimist, I am always holding onto hope I can find a way for River Waltz to work, so I’ll start exploring concrete avenues for songs after that date. As of right now my Plan C and D is royalty-free music and/or music from the “Public Domain Information Project”.
As I looked for backup plans I read up about copyright rules and such which helped a lot with my own understanding of what steps to take when getting appropriate approval for music usage.
Overall, I’m worried I wont get a response from any of these groups. Yet, I am going to stay hopeful. Worst case, or Plan E in my case, I will have to become a composer as well! Stay tuned on this melodic adventure.
